Summary:  MacKayla Lane’s life is good. She has great friends, a decent job, and a car that breaks down only every other week or so. In other words, she’s your perfectly ordinary twenty-first-century woman. Or so she thinks…until something extraordinary happens.

When her sister is murdered, leaving a single clue to her death–a cryptic message on Mac’s cell phone–Mac journeys to Ireland in search of answers. The quest to find her sister’s killer draws her into a shadowy realm where nothing is as it seems, where good and evil wear the same treacherously seductive mask. She is soon faced with an even greater challenge: staying alive long enough to learn how to handle a power she had no idea she possessed–a gift that allows her to see beyond the world of man, into the dangerous realm of the Fae….

As Mac delves deeper into the mystery of her sister’s death, her every move is shadowed by the dark, mysterious Jericho, a man with no past and only mockery for a future. As she begins to close in on the truth, the ruthless Vlane–an alpha Fae who makes sex an addiction for human women–closes in on her. And as the boundary between worlds begins to crumble, Mac’s true mission becomes clear: find the elusive Sinsar Dubh before someone else claims the all-powerful Dark Book–because whoever gets to it first holds nothing less than complete control of the very fabric of both worlds in their hands….

After Karen Marie Moning's Highlander paranormal romance series, comes a brand new urban fantasy set in Ireland that takes you into a world where you just wish would not end.
We are being told the story of Mackayla Lane in the past-present pov, at least I think this is what it is referred to as, since she tells the story one year ahead and we are now just seeing the events unfold as she tells them to us.

The story starts off with Mac, as she is known as to her family and friends spending the rest of her summer by the pool in her parents house as she waits for them to return from their vacation. Her sister, Alina, who has been in Dublin, Ireland for the past 7 months studying at Trinity college and is expected back anytime soon.
Things don't go according to plan. No, they sure don't. One summer's afternoon, Mac gets a call, and it's not one she wished to have gotten, like, ever. This call changed her whole life. Her whole reason for being.
She gets told her sister was found murdered in Dublin.
And so our story begins....

Mac then after deciding the police in Dublin, also known as the Garda couldn't or wouldn't achieve the results she and her parents needed by themselves, she herself decides to head over there and try find some information to help them in catching whomever killed her sister. She wouldn't rest, or leave Ireland until she was satisfied the Garda are back on track in terms of finding the person responsible.
It wasn't until she arrives in Dublin that Mac sees she is way over her head. She encounters certain creatures, and people, such as egnimatic bookstore owner, Jericho Barrons, who seems to want the very thing her sister was apparantly after before her timely death. Mac only has a phone message to go on, but if that's all she has then so be it.

Throughout this novel, Mac finds her eyes wide open, which they weren't when she had first arrived. Things aren't as she imagined them to be. Not only of Ireland, but of the whole world.
As she digs deeper into this strange new world, she makes some interesting and shocking discoveries, meets new people who enter her life in a strange and peculiar way and she'll start to question many things. She'll start to wonder whether she understand the way things work, and ... does she even know who she is herself?

I was so enchanted by this book from the very first page. Sure, at first I was a little confused, but the more I read on, I couldn't put the book down. This is what I love about books and especially the ones where the stories are so enticing.
The way Karen writes amazed me. I had no idea someone could write like that. It was so sophisticated, full of passion and life and she drew me into a world that I had never read about before.
I had never read a book in this kind of genre before.. and by that I mean that involved the Fae. I don't think there wasn't anything I didn't love.

Mac was a strong protagonist. At first, she was a little.. yes, everything is right in the world -- pink girly girl, but the moment when she realized that things are not like she imagined, she became, at least started to grow into this woman that is so headstrong and independant you'd have to be proud of.
Jericho, oh yes, the mysterious Jericho. In this book we didn't find out much about him, and I think everyone loves a mystery.
We knew there was something strange, dark and enchanting about him, and knew he was involved more more than Mac or we ever thought. He was there for her even when she might not want him to be, and there comes a point where more questions surrounding him get raised and it only makes you yearn to learn more about him.

I see this book being an introduction to the series, where you get introduced to the plot, the characters and the world Karen creates for us, as readers. By the end of the book... it only makes you want to see what is next in the world of Mackayla Lane.
